Given the endless amount of rain we’ve had in the UK, It’s hard to believe that the hay-fever season is upon us! Rest assured though- once the temperatures lift for a few days and the sun comes out, there will be an explosion of colour and pollen, so it’s time to be prepared.
As the seasons change and nature bursts into bloom, many people find themselves battling seasonal allergies. Whether it’s the pollen from trees in spring, grasses in summer, or ragweed in the autumn, these allergies can turn a beautiful time of year into a sneezy, itchy nightmare. But fear not! With the right knowledge and treatment, you can overcome seasonal allergies and enjoy the outdoors once again.
Seasonal allergies, also known as hay fever or allergic rhinitis, occur when your immune system reacts to allergens in the environment, such as pollen, mould spores, or grass. When you come into contact with these allergens, your body releases histamines, which trigger symptoms like sneezing, congestion, itchy eyes, and a runny nose.

Common Triggers:
- Spring: Tree pollen, such as oak, birch is a major culprit during springtime.
- Summer: Grass pollen tends to be the primary trigger during the summer months as we get mowing!
- Autumn: Ragweed pollen is notorious for causing allergies in autumn, affecting millions of people.
- Year-round: Mould spores and dust mites can trigger allergies regardless of the season, especially in humid environments or poorly ventilated areas.
Treatment Options:
- Over-the-counter Medicine:
- Antihistamines: These medications help block the effects of histamines, providing relief from sneezing, itching, and runny nose. Common options include loratadine (Clarityn), cetirizine, and fexofenadine (Allegra).
- Nasal sprays: Corticosteroid nasal sprays like fluticasone (Flixonase) and mometasone (Nasonex) can help reduce inflammation and alleviate symptoms like nasal congestion and sneezing.
- Kenalog Steroid injections: For individuals with severe allergies or those who do not respond well to medications, Kenalog can be considered under the supervision of a doctor. These steroid injections are given in the buttock and reduce your immune response to the allergens. They reduce the severe symptoms for a few weeks and can really help for ‘one event’ e.g. a wedding or important exams. However, they are not recommended for long term use as high dose and long-term steroids can be associated with long term side effects. This treatment should be considered carefully with your doctor.
- Avoidance Strategies:
- Monitor pollen counts: Check local pollen forecasts and try to limit outdoor activities on high pollen days, especially during peak pollen times like early morning and windy days.
- Keep windows closed: To prevent pollen from entering your home, keep windows and doors closed during peak allergy seasons and use air conditioning with a HEPA filter.
- Shower and change clothes: After spending time outdoors, shower and change into fresh clothes to remove pollen from your skin and clothing.
- Use a nasal rinse: Rinsing your nasal passages with a saline solution can help flush out allergens and relieve congestion.
- Natural Remedies:
- Honey: Some people believe that consuming locally sourced honey may help build tolerance to pollen allergens over time, although scientific evidence is limited.
- Quercetin: This flavonoid found in foods like apples, onions, and berries has anti-inflammatory properties and may help alleviate allergy symptoms.
- Butterbur: Extracts from the butterbur plant have been shown to reduce symptoms of allergic rhinitis, but it’s essential to choose a reputable source and consult with a healthcare professional before use.
Seasonal allergies can be a nuisance, but they don’t have to ruin your enjoyment of the outdoors. By understanding your triggers and using a combination of avoidance strategies, over-the-counter medications, and, if necessary injections as guided by your doctor, you can find relief from allergy symptoms and reclaim your quality of life. Remember to consult with a healthcare professional for personalised advice and treatment options tailored to your specific needs. With the right approach, you can conquer seasonal allergies and embrace each season with open arms.
