What is Medical Acupuncture?
It’s an adaptation of Chinese acupuncture used therapeutically, using current knowledge of anatomy, physiology and principles of evidence based medicine.
It can help with not only musculoskeletal tension, pain and injuries, but also improve chronic or recurrent headaches, allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, digestive symptoms, period problems, insomnia and anxiety amongst other things.
Why use it?
(Whilst the theories behind traditional Chinese acupuncture can be difficult to reconcile with those of modern medicine,) there is a large body of research into acupuncture and pain which helps us understand how acupuncture might work.
In particular, acupuncture releases natural pain-relieving and healing chemical messengers in the body (-such as oxytocin, serotonin, adenosine, Nerve Growth Factor, B-Endorphin, ACTH). So in essence, it appears to help the body heal itself.
Anti-ageing facial acupuncture works by increasing blood flow and stimulating collagen repair.
What is involved in treatment?
After a short consultation, the tips of very fine needles are gently inserted into the skin at the relevant points to encourage healing to the area in question. Most people do not find that acupuncture hurts, and actually find it very relaxing!
Once the needles are inserted, they will stay in for about 20 minutes whilst you lie on the couch, before being gently removed. Just like after having a massage, you’ll be encouraged to drink lot of water as your body often detoxifies after the treatment.
When having acupuncture for muscular injuries, the treatment can be more focused and deeper into the affected muscles. This can feel more tender, in the same way as a sports massage, and afterwards people often feel the injury starts to improve significantly.
