Empowering Your Weight Loss Journey: Combining Injections with a Supportive, Whole-Body Approach

Dr Eduardo Di Cuffa – Thyme GP.

If you’ve been looking into ways to lose weight, you’ve probably come across all sorts of methods—changing your eating habits, starting an exercise routine, trying different diets, or even medications. More recently, certain weight loss injections (like “GLP-1” medications such as semaglutide) have been getting a lot of attention. These treatments can help you eat less, feel fuller, and lose weight more effectively. But the real secret to lasting success isn’t just the injection alone. The best results come when you combine these treatments with a supportive plan that includes good nutrition, regular exercise, and attention to your overall well-being.

Why Do We Need Better Weight Loss Solutions?
Obesity and being overweight are common in many communities. In our area, about 1 in 4 adults has obesity, which matches the national average. This shows there’s a real need for approaches that go beyond quick fixes and fad diets. Research now suggests that when you combine the right medications with healthier daily habits and emotional support, you can achieve more meaningful and lasting weight loss.

Understanding GLP-1 Weight Loss Injections and Other New Options
You might have heard of semaglutide, which is often known by its brand names like Wegovy or Ozempic, or liraglutide (Saxenda). These belong to a group called GLP-1 receptor agonists. A newer medication called tirzepatide is also on the horizon. While not yet licensed in the UK, it’s expected to offer even greater benefits when it’s available.

How Do These Medications Work?

  • GLP-1 Medications (like Semaglutide):
These drugs work by mimicking a natural hormone in your body (GLP-1) that helps control your appetite and blood sugar levels. They slow down how quickly your stomach empties and make you feel fuller for longer. As a result, you may feel satisfied eating less food, without feeling like you’re forcing yourself to go hungry.
  • Tirzepatide (Dual-Action, undergoing NICE review for licencing):
Tirzepatide works by mimicking the GLP-1 and GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) hormones which are naturally secreted by the intestine. The current evidence shows this combined effect can lead to even more noticeable weight loss when paired with lifestyle measures.

What Kind of Results Can You Expect?
Studies have shown that:

  • Taking semaglutide by itself can lead to about 14–15% weight loss over a year.
  • Combining semaglutide with lifestyle changes (like healthier eating and exercise) boosts that to around 17.4%.
  • Tirzepatide, when it becomes available, and is combined with lifestyle changes, might help you lose 20–23% of your body weight.

This shows that while the medication alone can help, you get even better results when you add in other positive changes.

Possible Side Effects and the Importance of Medical Support
Like all medications, weight loss injections can have side effects. Common ones include feeling a bit sick (nausea), having diarrhoea or constipation, and sometimes headaches. More serious issues, such as gallstone problems, are less common but do happen. It’s also important to note that these drugs aren’t recommended if you’re pregnant or have certain health conditions.

That’s why having regular check-ups with a doctor or healthcare professional is key. They can help keep track of how you’re doing, adjust the dose if needed, and run blood tests to make sure everything is going smoothly. This careful monitoring helps make your weight loss journey safer and more comfortable.

Why a Whole-Body, Personalised Approach Matters
While medications are a powerful tool, the real, long-lasting change comes from treating you as a whole person, not just a number on the scale. Research shows that combining medication with a healthy eating plan, consistent exercise, stress management, and emotional support can help you keep the weight off in the long run. Without this “all-around” approach, many people struggle to maintain their progress once they stop taking the medication.

Our Holistic Weight Management Programme
Starting in the new year, we’ll be offering a program that goes beyond simply giving you a prescription. We use the latest medical and lifestyle-based research to guide you through a step-by-step process, including:

  • Initial Assessments: We’ll do blood tests and ask about your habits, preferences, and challenges to create a plan tailored just for you.
  • Regular Medical Oversight: You’ll have check-ins with a doctor who can monitor your progress, help manage any side effects and make any necessary changes to your medication.
  • Nutritional Guidance: You’ll get advice on what to eat and how to build balanced, enjoyable meals that support your weight loss without feeling deprived.
  • Emotional and Psychological Support: This can include behavioural strategies for healthy habits, and tips for better sleep.  We’ll offer tools like mindfulness techniques and, if needed, referral for more hands on psychological support.
  • Flexible Levels of Support: We recognise that everyone’s needs and budgets are different, so we offer different membership levels. This way, you can choose the package that fits your goals and personal situation.

Can I Get This Through the NHS?
While the NHS does have weight management services and may provide some medications, access is often limited, with strict referral criteria, and there can be long waiting times. Our program is designed to offer a more immediate and complete alternative, with a combination of medication guidance, nutrition support, and ongoing coaching to help you stay on track.

Looking Ahead
The world of weight loss is changing, and these new injections are an exciting development. But the best, longest-lasting results happen when you combine medication with healthy foods, regular movement, emotional well-being, and a supportive team by your side. We look forward to partnering with you in the new year to help you achieve meaningful, sustainable changes for better health and quality of life.

Whole Health Checks

Begin the journey to understanding your health and wellbeing

Thyme’s annual Whole Health Checks are designed to determine your current state of health and to give the best chance of early detection of diseases and avoiding complications. The key to live a healthier life

  • Increased stress, lack of time for physical exercise and unhealthy eating can lead to gradual deterioration of our general health.
  • Some lifestyle diseases are ‘silent killers’- they harm our body without causing any symptoms. Our preventive Health Checks can screen for these diseases.
  • Many cancers are symptomless and not diagnosing them at an early stage can cost lives. People at risk of developing cancer can have a better chance of recovery if they invest in regular health checks.
