Health tips for 2025

New Year, new you? Or just version 2.0

Dr Riccardo Di Cuffa

A new year is the time for renewing our goals and this often leads to a new health drive. It has never been so important to reflect on our health and maybe be kinder to ourselves but setting realistic goals that lead to permanent lifestyle changes is the ambition – not short-term fixes.

In this era of social media and constant news reporting, it is increasingly complex for patients to know the right things to do. Constant, often contradictory reports about medications that cause cancer, or new deadly viral infections can be overwhelming. This is where your GP can help. “Doing everything in moderation” is my motto and taking a common-sense approach. If you are worried about things, speak to your doctor before making knee jerk decisions.

Our body is marvellously complex, but we still need to support and look after it. It’s always advisable to consider measures that help to support the daily functions it must perform to keep us alive. Early illnesses can often be detected before symptoms occur and medicals can help inform you about your health.

Here are some health tips for patients to prioritise their health and wellness in 2025:

1. Set Realistic Health Goals

  • Start small with achievable goals like drinking more water or walking a set number of steps daily.
  • Track your progress using wearable devices, apps or journals to stay motivated.

2. Keep Active

  • Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week (e.g., brisk walking, cycling, swimming).
  • Include strength training exercises at least twice a week.

3. Eat Unprocessed, Balanced Meals

  • Focus on a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats.
  • Reduce sugar, salt, and processed foods. Check the ingredients – you’ll be surprised how the same foods can have completely different ingredients in the supermarket when you compare brands.
  • Consider batch cooking and meal prepping to save time and ensure healthier choices are always to hand.

4. Prioritise Your Mental Health

  • Practice mindfulness or meditation daily. There are a number of apps now that help guide you.
  • Seek professional help if you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or depressed.
  • Stay connected with friends and family for emotional support.

5. Get Regular Checkups

  • Schedule annual medical exams. An annual profile of blood tests can tell you a lot about your health.
  • Attend routine screening appointments
  • Keep vaccinations up to date.

6. Improve Sleep Habits

  • Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night.
  • Maintain a consistent sleep schedule, even on weekends.
  • Avoid computer screens or mobile devices and heavy meals before bedtime.

7. Stay Hydrated

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day (aim for about 8 glasses).
  • Limit caffeine and sugary drinks.

8. Quit Smoking and Limit Alcohol

  • Seek support for smoking cessation through counselling or medications.
  • Limit alcohol to 14 units a week over 4 days or avoid it altogether. There are some great 0% alternatives available now.

9. Manage Chronic Conditions

  • Take medications as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Monitor conditions like diabetes, hypertension, or asthma regularly.
  • Consult your doctor for adjustments as needed.

11. Stay Informed

  • Keep up with new health guidelines and advice from reliable sources like the NHS.
  • Discuss health concerns with your doctor before trying new supplements, diets or fitness programmes.

12. Be Kind to Yourself

  • None of us get it right all of the time!
  • Celebrate small victories and don’t dwell on setbacks.
  • Prioritise self-care to build a sustainable routine.

If you’re looking to make big health changes in 2025 get the support of a doctor you trust. If you’d like to talk to us about where to start, please get in touch.

PHASE 1: Understanding your health

  1. Your journey starts

You will first speak with a Thyme Personal Health Planner. They coordinate your journey, including your initial consultations, and will function as a central point of contact guiding through your healthspan journey.

  1. Advanced Nurse Practitioner consultation

A range of health assessments, administered by Thyme’s experienced nurses. Preventative tests are then analysed at our state-of-the-art laboratories.

  1. Scientific analysis of your biochemistry

Scientific analysis of your tests allow us to understand your health needs at a cellular level, identifying areas in need of improvement or that require attention.

  1. GP consultation

A meeting with one of Thyme’s GPs provides an opportunity to understand your results in detail. They will complete a full health history and lifestyle review.

PHASE 2: Improving your health

Your Thyme GP will develop a personalised plan. A personalised strategy that optimises your health and wellbeing for the long term. It will highlight priority areas and recommend next steps relating to functional medicine including your nutrition, mental wellbeing, sleep and physical health.

PHASE 3: Managing your health (members only)

Full membership to Thyme provides a highly personalised service of continued support to help you maintain optimal health. Our Personal Health Planners and GPs will guide you through any further preventive tests and your on-going support from functional medicine experts.

Your Whole Health team will work together in the background to ensure your Healthspan strategy is relevant, effective and in progress.

We are there when you and those you care about need us too. Members can share Thyme with up to seven family members or friends, including access to our experts and private GPs.

Whole Health Checks

Begin the journey to understanding your health and wellbeing

Thyme’s annual Whole Health Checks are designed to determine your current state of health and to give the best chance of early detection of diseases and avoiding complications. The key to live a healthier life

  • Increased stress, lack of time for physical exercise and unhealthy eating can lead to gradual deterioration of our general health.
  • Some lifestyle diseases are ‘silent killers’- they harm our body without causing any symptoms. Our preventive Health Checks can screen for these diseases.
  • Many cancers are symptomless and not diagnosing them at an early stage can cost lives. People at risk of developing cancer can have a better chance of recovery if they invest in regular health checks.
